Folkestone Central Labour candidates respond to the proposed closure of Debenhams in Folkestone.
Flagship shops like Debenhams shape High Streets and encourage other successful retailers to follow suit; this is alarming news for our High Street and local economy as hundreds more lose an income to spend elsewhere in the District.
This is a hammer blow for our town. The building and store is one of a kind. Labour’s sympathy and solidarity is with local people whose jobs will be put at risk by the closure. Folkestone Debenhams is a landmark site in the town loved by thousands of shoppers and with a popular cafe. Its position as a gateway to the high street is crucial in bringing visitors into the town centre and bringing money into other traders. It’s shameful. The closure adds to the roll call of High Street names which we hear every day are closing under this Tory government.
We 💕 our Great British high streets. That’s why we’ve got a plan to save them.
